Questing Beast - flat color

Decided against saving the Inktober files for the new blog.  Honestly, I might go crazy if I don't start the new blog at a round number (1000) so I will be posting those in the meantime.

For now, here is a flat color pass for the questing beast.

Sketch page 955 further drakengard wyvern progress

Drakengard wyvern progress!  yeah... I changed it again.  The face was giving my trouble (because I made it up) so now I'm making it match up with a komodo dragon structure a bit more.  I think my color choices have improved since with all of these color studies.

here is the previous version

Drakengard progress - 2

I made more progress on the Drakengard-style Dragon.  (I suppose technically it's a wyvern).

Looking at it again the wyvern's anatomy was very off so my progress for today was revising the design.

First step: Drawing in new linework
Here it is, in its current state.  Chest is much larger.  Leg is more balanced.  Shrank down his head.

A size comparison for convenience sake

"Lonely" aka "Shadow and Beast" - FINISHED

It's fiiiinally done.  But hey,  I FINISHED A THING.  Even if it took about a billion years, I can be happy with that.

I still dont have a title for this... titles are difficult.  Right now it is called "Lonely".

The painting was based off of a an un-finished concept from January 2010.  It changed quite a bit but some elements remained.  (it makes me feel a bit better about my art progression, seeing them next to each other, too)

Drakengard-Style

Trying out some paint ideas.

I've been on a huge Drakengard kick lately.  It's a very weird, very cool game with DRAGONS with crazy horns and tails.  I like it a lot. :)

I'm listening to the NieR (Drakengard's successor) soundtrack right now and trying not to cry because it is beautiful.  Seriously, go listen to it.

Hello!  I was in San Antonio for a while visiting my folks but I managed to find some to draw a few pages!

Shadow and Beast update

Big Shadow beast update.  It's getting close to being done, I think.  Getting away from it for a while helped me figure out what colors I want to use.

Bit of an update

More work on the curious shadow illustration. WIP render

You know what's a really good soundtrack to listen to while painting.  Bastion!  It makes me want to paint forever.

Moar Illustrashen

Starting out with some flat colors to see where I want this to go.  I think I like the color scheme.  I wanted it to be playful without being over-saturated.  Hopefully it worked out!

Illustration update

I made some changes to the Shadow and Beast concept based upon suggestions. (Shadow and Beast is a tentative title name... titles are hard)

I think this works!  Will start color soon.

Sketch Pages 880- 881

I refined the first rough black and white paint some more and then completed the other two.  Next step is to pick one and take it to final color!

This is going to be a tough decision.  I think #1 works the best, composition-wise, but there are elements of the others that I think work better.  Like I think I prefer the shadow creature from 3 more.

Do you guys have any ideas?

Sketch Page 873- Luna the Wanderer

2014, Luna.
This is a re-color / re-imagining of a character that a good friend gave to me.  It had been quite a while since I last drew this wolfy girl.  It was a ton of fun visiting this design again while playing around with a texture brush.  It was also reassuring to see how much I've improved since the last time I drew her.

2007, the first time I drew Luna.
BIG difference.  I feel a lot better about what I've done so far, even if there is a loooooong way to go, still.

More Dream Catcher staves

Further progress on the Dream Catcher staves.  If anyone is wondering why its taking so long for me to finish these things, it's because I keep scrapping the color studies and starting over.  I think these guys are the closest I'm going to get to the style I want for them.

Klymene Winter color passes

Color passes for Klymene's winter coat.  I think I'm leaning toward coats 3 and 4.

Klymene, the Forest Spirit - quick paint

I noticed something while at work - I am molasses slow when it comes to churning out concepts.  Ridiculously slow.  STUPID SLOW, EVEN.

So I'm going to try to focus on conveying ideas fast.  The focus isn't on a finished work (although I may go back and rework some of these pieces) the goal is to make the idea readable, quickly.  Today's quick paint was on a 30 minute timer.  As much as I wanted to keep painting on it, I forced myself to quit.  I really like how this turned out.  I'd like to visit it later but for now I will leave it alone.

Delsun- Color idea #1

Here is a color mock-up for Delsun.  I thought I would play around with a cool color scheme.  I like it but there are more things to try before I reach my final decision.  This took about an hour and a half so it wasn't meant to be a final render.
